Our lives are shaped by critical moments and chance encounters with people we meet along the way. It's never completely obvious to me when that will happen so I try to make the most out of every interaction.
I call those times pivotal experiences, and I thought you might find it interesting if I shared some of those people and aha moments. In each of the posts below, I highlight a person that made a big difference in my life, and the big lesson I learned from that encounter.
It's worth pointing out three obvious disclaimers before I get started: first, this is an endless list and just because you don't see a name doesn't mean they didn't make a profound difference or that they won't appear in future vignettes. And second, it's an over-simplification to say I only gleaned one takeaway from a person or experience or that the lesson came from one single person, but you get the point. And finally, third, I try here to be as factual to the moment as possible but I hope you'll forgive that my memory isn't perfect. That's how life is anyway. Onward!
Foo Fighters at Dreamforce '08. Because of a last minute cancellation, Foo Fighters stepped in for what was at the time a little known corporate gig. At the end, Dave Grohl's reaction to the Dreamforce crowd summed it all up: "not your average office party." The rest is history. The media dubbed Dreamforce the "Woodstock of Cloud Computing!"
The Foo Fighters have since performed multiple encore performances at the famous Dreamforce conference. The best known was in 2015 when Dave Grohl broke his leg just prior on his concert tour, but still showed up in a custom chair to still perform on stage. They rocked their greatest hits including my favorite: My Hero. Dave Grohl is my hero.
Little known fact: years ago I appeared in 3 episodes of MTV Sandblast (pre-cursor to the Real World). My partner (Jackie) and I had a blast (pun intended) even though we lost. I think that was me as a human field goal in this 1-minute trailer (kind of blurry). Funny sidenote: on the heels of this competition, I was asked to audition to be an MTV VJ! I failed miserably but was honored to be considered.
At heart, I am an introvert but I've spent most of my life in extroverted activities. One of those things I'm known for is building communities at scale and driving member adoption and engagement. Here's a glimpse at one project I'm proud of. That's my voice in the background:)
