I remember the first time I actively thought about Trader Joe's. Strangely enough, I was not in one of the stores nor snacking on one of their many tasty treats. Instead, I was interviewing at Google for a senior marketing role, and the moment happened during a Zoom call (probably a Hangout:-) with the hiring manager. She wanted to assess my customer experience aptitude, and she asked me to describe my favorite brand and why.
I had to think about this for a minute because I've had the fortune of working for some amazing customer-focused companies, and I'm obsessed with those that seek to delight users. After the uncomfortable pause, I picked Trader Joe's and proceeded to describe the many ways they've wowed me on visits. It could be the quality of their products, the friendliness of their staff, the way a crewmate would walk me to an item I coudn't find, the fun way they'd show me dishes I never knew existed....I could go on and on.
Ironically, the exec hated my answer. I could tell from the body language and facial expressions. Perhaps I should have selected an example more typical of Silicon Valley tech. Maybe I wasn't listening as well as I should have. Suffice to say I didn't get the job but I don't regret for one second the answer.
In fact years later, I applied for a job at Trader Joe's, and working there has changed my life. I know so much more of the things they do with their values, people, products and services to create value and moments of magic that turn casual shoppers into vocal advocates and customers for life. It's probably satisfying validation that years later TJ's has been recognized as the top grocery chain and one of the most beloved brands.
So below, I will continue to write about my obsession with the store, whether it's reviewing food favorites, recounting stories of people I've met, my experiences working retail and more.
